Summit Elementary School

Message From the Principal

Summit Elementary School is located next to the YMCA at Pabst Farms and serves more than 500 students from 4K to grade 4.  The staff of Summit School is comprised of about 40 highly qualified professional educators.  Our staff maintains the standards and practices of a professional learning community, collaborating with one another in implementing best practices to further student learning.

Summit continues to be a leader in the area in Makerspace and STEAM education (science, technology, engineering, art, and math). On a regular basis we have had educators from throughout Wisconsin and Northern Illinois come and learn from our students and staff. It has been a hub for learning, creativity, and innovation. We are thankful that the Oconomowoc Public Education Foundation (OPEF) awarded us with a follow up grant, Maker Space on the Move, which funded the creation of several mobile maker-carts. This nice addition helped us easily bring makerspace activities into the classroom. Finally, the Summit Stage was added to our library as an intimate and unique place for students to perform and share their learning with their peers and families.

Furthering our work from last year, our school continued to implement Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports (PBIS) as a part of a system to support student learning.  We were honored to be named a School of Distinction for the 2nd year in a row by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. Our work in PBIS acknowledges the importance of explicitly teaching social skills and positive behaviors to students, then providing students with the support they need to be successful with these important habits.  Our practices guide all students in the setting and attaining of goals, so that they experience not only academic success, but also success in their social and emotional growth.

The Summit staff continuously strives to improve the literacy and math instruction we provide for our students.  During the 2015-16 school year, teachers learned about various options for small group work that can be used within the math and reading workshop to focus instruction and more efficiently meet the diverse needs of students.  Teachers also studied various professional resources and engaged in in-depth, across grade level discussions about the skills and strategies needed to read texts, write genres, and mathematically solve problems at various and increasing levels of complexity. This knowledge of skill development enables us to focus our instruction to better meet the individual needs of each student so that every student is able to achieve significant growth across the year. Our reading math data from the 15-16 school year showed that all of this work really paid off for our students.

Summit students continue to make a difference in the local community, as well.  They raised several thousand dollars through Jump Rope for Heart, collected food for the Oconomowoc Food Pantry, made blankets for the Linus Project, raised almost $2,000 for Pennies for Patients, and supported two current and former classmates in their battle with leukemia.

Summit Elementary School is an incredible place for learning and growing. Our parents, students, and staff all agree, and we look forward to seeing you in our halls and classrooms soon!
